This guide assumes you have neither R, RStudio nor MacTeX installed before beginning the tutorial. Having installed R and RStudio before installing MacTeX?
If you are running as a standard user, you may have varying degrees of success. I ran this tutorial as the default user that was created during installation of macOS. In other words, everything you need is explained in this tutorial.

When writing this tutorial I used a new and 100% clean installation of macOS- no software was installed in advance and no changes had been made to the settings of the computer (except changing the color of the desktop). If you are running an older version of macOS you should still be able to follow along, provided you are running at least OS X El Capitan. This tutorial assumes you are running macOS High Sierra. (If you’re not familar with R, I’m not quite sure why you’re reading, but of course, you’re very welcome to read along!) An R Markdown file is basically a standard Markdown file with embedded R code chunks. I've looked at the RStudio PowerPoint Trouble Shooting page, but it does not address. I've searched using Google an on stackoverflow but cannot find anyone else dealing with this. I assume this is an RStudio, rmarkdown or knitr issue. pptx files, so it should not be a MacOS issue. I've looked in Finder, using "Get Info" and verified that PowerPoint is the app associated with. pptx file (I've confirmed the file is in the wd and it will open), but after rendering it tries to open another app (called thebrain, it is mind mapping software), not PowerPoint to open it. I am making my first rmarkdown for PowerPoint.
